The Complete Story of O2 Mobile UK

O2 is one of the UK's two original mobile networks, with a history stretching back to 1985. Through multiple ownership changes, three technology generations and a brand transformation, it has grown into one of the UK's most recognised mobile operators serving over 22 million customers.

The story begins with the formation of Telecom Securicor Cellular Radio Limited in 1983 — a 60/40 joint venture between British Telecom and security firm Securicor. The network launched commercially on 7 January 1985 as Cellnet, just six days after Vodafone — making them the UK's two founding mobile networks on analogue TACS technology.

BT acquired Securicor's remaining stake in 1999, rebranding to BT Cellnet. In 2001, BT spun off its mobile operations as a separately listed company — mmO2 plc — which then introduced the O2 brand globally in 2002. A major milestone came in 2006 when Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica acquired O2 plc for approximately £17.7 billion — one of the largest European telecoms acquisitions at the time.

In 2021, O2 merged with Virgin Media to create Virgin Media O2 — a 50/50 joint venture between Telefónica and Liberty Global. By 2024–2026, O2 launched 5G Standalone (5G+) — the UK's largest 5G SA network covering 87% of the population. It also became the first UK operator to offer direct-to-device satellite connectivity via O2 Satellite, extending mobile coverage to remote areas unreachable by traditional masts.

The Complete Story of Three UK

Three is the UK's youngest major network, launching in 2003 as the country's first 3G-only operator — with no 2G fallback — and pioneering unlimited data plans and generous roaming years before rivals. Now part of VodafoneThree following a 2025 merger.

Three was launched on 3 March 2003 by Hutchison 3G UK Limited, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa (now CK Hutchison Holdings). The decision to launch exclusively on 3G — skipping 2G entirely — was a bold commercial gamble at a time when 3G handsets were expensive and coverage limited, but it positioned Three as the mobile data future network.

Three built its reputation by offering more data for less money than any established rival. It pioneered unlimited data plans in the UK years ahead of competitors. Its Go Roam scheme — free roaming in 71 countries — became a defining feature. In 2015, Three's parent attempted to acquire O2 for £10.25 billion, but the European Commission blocked the deal in 2016 over competition concerns. A subsequent merger with Vodafone UK was announced in 2023, with the VodafoneThree merger completing in early 2025.

The Complete Story of EE (Everything Everywhere)

EE brings together over 30 years of UK mobile heritage through Orange (1994) and One2One/T-Mobile (1993). It launched the UK's first 4G network in 2012 and first 5G network in 2019, and is consistently rated the UK's fastest and highest-performing mobile network.

Orange UK launched in April 1994, backed by Hutchison Whampoa and Hong Kong investors. It was revolutionary — offering per-second billing instead of per-minute, clear tariffs, and distinctive marketing. Its "The future's bright, the future's Orange" campaign became one of the UK's most recognised advertising slogans. Orange was acquired by France Télécom in 2000 for £25.1 billion.

One2One launched in September 1993 as the UK's first 1800MHz GSM digital network. Deutsche Telekom acquired it in 1999 for £8.4 billion, rebranding it T-Mobile UK in 2002. In 2010, France Télécom (Orange) and Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile) agreed to merge their UK operations into Everything Everywhere Limited, later rebranded EE. On 30 May 2012, EE launched the UK's first commercial 4G network in 11 cities — giving it a 6-month head start over O2 and Vodafone. BT Group acquired EE in 2016 for £12.5 billion, reuniting BT with the mobile market.

The Complete Story of Tesco Mobile

Tesco Mobile is the UK's largest MVNO, uniquely combining supermarket loyalty rewards with mobile services. Running on O2's infrastructure, customers receive identical coverage to O2 subscribers while earning Tesco Clubcard points on every bill payment — a feature no other UK mobile network offers.

Tesco Mobile was established in 2003 as a joint venture between Tesco (the UK's largest supermarket) and O2. As an MVNO, it does not own physical network infrastructure — masts, spectrum or core network equipment. Instead, it purchases wholesale capacity from O2 and resells it under the Tesco Mobile brand. This means customers get exactly the same 4G and 5G signal as O2 subscribers.

Initially a PAYG-only service with SIM cards sold in Tesco stores, the network expanded to Pay Monthly contracts in 2008. The Tesco Clubcard integration is its defining unique feature — customers earn Clubcard points for every pound spent on their mobile bill, redeemable in Tesco stores or exchanged for vouchers and rewards. No other UK mobile network offers supermarket loyalty rewards. Following the 2021 formation of Virgin Media O2, Tesco Mobile's JV was updated accordingly. The network has won Best Mobile Network for Customer Service at the Uswitch Telecoms Awards for five consecutive years: 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 — an unprecedented achievement.

2003

The Complete Story of Vodafone UK

Vodafone made the UK's very first mobile phone call on 1 January 1985 — hours before rival Cellnet — and grew from a single UK network into one of the world's most recognised telecoms brands, present in over 30 countries globally. The largest corporate takeover in history was a Vodafone deal.

The story begins with Racal Electronics, a British defence electronics company founded in 1950. In 1982, its subsidiary Racal Telecom Limited was awarded one of the UK's two original cellular phone licences. The network went live on 1 January 1985 when Sir Ernest Harrison, Racal's chairman, telephoned Sir Anthony Bevins of The Times newspaper from Parliament Square, London — making the UK's very first commercial mobile phone call.

The Vodafone name was a portmanteau of Voice, Data, and Fone. Racal Telecom was partially floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1988, then fully demerged as Vodafone Group plc in 1991. Through the 1990s and 2000s, Vodafone expanded globally at an extraordinary pace. The 1999 AirTouch merger created Vodafone AirTouch plc. The 2000 hostile takeover of Germany's Mannesmann AG for approximately £112 billion remains to this day the largest corporate takeover in history. In 2025, Vodafone UK merged with Three UK to create VodafoneThree.

1982

❓ FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, direct answers to the most common questions about UK mobile networks, plans and technology.

What is a SIM Only plan and who is it best for?
+
A SIM-only plan gives you a SIM card with calls, texts and data — no handset. You use it in a phone you already own. Because no device is subsidised, SIM-only is typically 30–50% cheaper per month than equivalent Pay Monthly phone deals. It suits anyone satisfied with their current phone, those who bought a device outright, or anyone wanting maximum value from their monthly spend. Available on 1-month rolling, 12-month and 24-month contracts.
How do I keep my phone number when switching networks?
+
Text PAC to 65075 from your current mobile. You receive your PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) within one minute, for free. Give this code to your new network when signing up — your number transfers within one working day. The PAC is valid for 30 days. To switch without keeping your number, text STAC to 75075 instead. Number portability is free and available on all UK networks.
What is 5G and do I need it?
+
5G is the fifth generation of mobile network technology. It delivers faster speeds (typically 100–500+ Mbps real-world), lower latency and greater capacity than 4G. For most everyday tasks — browsing, messaging, maps, social media — 4G is perfectly adequate. 5G makes a noticeable difference for heavy data users, people using their phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot, HD video streaming, and downloading large files. You also need a 5G-compatible device. 5G Standalone (5G SA), offered by O2 (5G+) and EE (5G+), is the most advanced form with lower latency and network slicing capability.
What is an eSIM and which phones support it?
+
An eSIM is a digital SIM permanently built into your device — no physical card to insert. You activate a mobile plan by scanning a QR code. Supported devices include: iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer flagship models, and Google Pixel 3 and newer. All major UK networks (O2, EE, Three, Vodafone, Tesco Mobile) now support eSIM. Always verify your specific device model on your chosen network's eSIM compatibility list before ordering.
How has roaming changed after Brexit for UK customers?
+
Before Brexit, EU regulations required UK networks to charge UK prices in the EU ("Roam Like at Home"). These rules ended on 31 December 2020. Now each network sets its own roaming terms: Three includes free roaming in 71 countries (Go Roam); Tesco Mobile includes 48 countries free (Home From Home); EE charges approximately £2.29/day on basic plans but includes it on higher tiers; O2 and Vodafone terms vary by plan. Ofcom requires a default £45 data roaming spend cap. Always check your specific plan before travelling.
How do I check mobile coverage at my address?
+
Each network has a postcode-based coverage checker on their website showing predicted indoor and outdoor 4G and 5G signal. Ofcom also provides an independent multi-network coverage checker at ofcom.org.uk that compares all networks at once. Coverage maps show predictions — building materials, terrain and local infrastructure affect real signal. The most reliable approach is testing a PAYG SIM at your actual premises before committing to a contract. All major UK networks support Wi-Fi Calling for weak indoor signal situations.
What should I check before signing a mobile contract?
+
Check: (1) Signal coverage at your home, work and key locations; (2) Your actual data usage (check in phone settings) before choosing an allowance; (3) Whether 5G is included if your device supports it; (4) Total cost of ownership — monthly × months + upfront; (5) Annual mid-contract price rise clauses — most networks apply CPI plus a fixed extra percentage; (6) Early termination fees; (7) EU roaming terms for your travel habits; (8) Whether your existing phone is unlocked and compatible with that network's frequencies if switching.
What happens at the end of my Pay Monthly contract?
+
Most networks continue charging the same amount after contract end unless you take action. Options at contract end: (1) Upgrade to a new device on a new contract; (2) Switch to a cheaper SIM-only plan on the same network — often significantly cheaper as the device is now paid off; (3) Switch to another network using a PAC code. If you had a Pay Monthly phone deal, by contract end the device cost is fully paid — continuing at the same rate means overpaying for a phone you now own outright. Review your contract 1–2 months before it ends.
What is the difference between an MNO and MVNO?
+
An MNO (Mobile Network Operator) owns physical infrastructure — spectrum licences, mobile masts, and core network equipment. O2, EE, Three and Vodafone are all MNOs. An MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) does not own infrastructure. It purchases wholesale network capacity from an MNO and resells it under its own brand. Tesco Mobile is the UK's largest MVNO, running entirely on O2's physical network. MVNOs can offer competitive pricing and unique features (like Clubcard points) because their infrastructure costs are lower — but coverage quality depends entirely on the underlying MNO's network.

O2 Mobile UK — Complete Guide

An independent, comprehensive guide to O2's services, coverage, technology and plans in 2026.

⚠️ This is an independent informational guide. We are not O2 or affiliated with O2. For official current pricing, plans and account support, visit o2.co.uk directly.

What is O2 Mobile UK?

O2 is one of the UK's four major mobile network operators (MNOs), serving approximately 22.4 million subscribers as of 2025. It operates under Virgin Media O2 — a 50/50 joint venture between Telefónica (Spain) and Liberty Global (US). O2 is one of the UK's two original mobile networks, having launched as Cellnet on 7 January 1985 — the very first day of UK mobile telephony.

O2 Mobile Services

SIM Only Plans

O2 SIM-only plans provide a SIM card with a monthly allowance of calls, texts and data — no handset. Available on 1-month rolling, 12-month and 24-month contracts. Data ranges from small allowances for light users to genuinely unlimited plans. 5G access (via O2's 5G+ Standalone network) is included on eligible plans with a compatible device.

Pay Monthly Phone Contracts

O2 Pay Monthly contracts bundle a new handset with an airtime plan into one monthly payment. The device cost is spread across the contract (typically 24 months). An optional upfront payment reduces the monthly amount. At contract end, customers can upgrade, switch to SIM-only, or port to another network.

Pay As You Go

O2 PAYG allows customers to top up credit and buy 30-day rolling bundles with no long-term commitment. Suitable for low-usage customers or those preferring complete flexibility.

eSIM

O2 supports eSIM on compatible devices. Activation is completed digitally via a QR code process. Compatible with iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and many other modern devices.

O2 5G+ (5G Standalone)

O2's 5G+ network uses pure end-to-end 5G Standalone architecture. As of early 2026, it covers 87% of the UK population — the UK's largest 5G Standalone footprint. 5G+ delivers lower latency and faster speeds than non-standalone 5G, and enables features including network slicing. Included at no extra cost on eligible plans with a 5G-compatible device.

O2 Satellite

In 2026, O2 became the first UK operator to offer direct-to-device satellite connectivity. O2 Satellite extends mobile coverage to remote areas unreachable by traditional masts. Works with compatible smartphones without additional hardware. Available as an add-on for Pay Monthly customers.

O2 Priority

A rewards programme for O2 mobile customers. Offers priority access to live event tickets, exclusive dining and entertainment discounts, and perks from partner brands. Accessed via the O2 Priority app.

O2 Coverage

O2 claims 99% 4G population coverage across the UK. In 2026, O2 was named Best Network for Coverage at the Uswitch Telecoms Awards for the second consecutive year and was rated Europe's most improved mobile network by Umlaut Connect in 2025. O2 provides coverage across more than two thirds of London Underground stations, with full tunnel coverage being progressively rolled out.

What to Check Before Choosing O2

  • Coverage at your home and work postcodes — use O2's own checker and Ofcom's independent tool
  • Whether your device is 5G-compatible to access O2's 5G+ network
  • Your actual monthly data usage before choosing a data allowance
  • Annual price rise clause details in any contract you consider
  • Roaming terms relevant to countries you travel to regularly

Home SIM Only Guide

SIM Only Plans — UK Guide

Complete guide to SIM-only mobile plans — who they suit, what to check and how to compare options.

What is a SIM Only Plan?

A SIM-only plan provides a SIM card with a monthly allowance of calls, texts and mobile data — with no handset included. You insert it into a phone you already own. Because no device is subsidised, SIM-only plans are typically 30–50% cheaper per month than equivalent Pay Monthly phone contracts.

Who is SIM Only Best For?

  • Anyone who owns a phone they're satisfied with
  • Those who bought a phone outright (from Apple, Samsung, or elsewhere)
  • Customers coming to the end of a Pay Monthly contract who want to reduce costs
  • People who want maximum data allowance for minimum monthly spend
  • Anyone who wants a short-term or flexible rolling monthly commitment

Contract Length Options

1-Month Rolling: Maximum flexibility — cancel with 30 days' notice. Usually the most expensive per-month rate but gives complete freedom. Best for: uncertain usage needs, temporary UK number, or testing a network.

12-Month: Balanced commitment with better pricing than rolling. Good if you're fairly settled but don't want a 2-year commitment.

24-Month: Usually the best value per month. Requires a 2-year commitment — check annual price rise clauses carefully. Best for: those confident they won't need to change for 2 years.

Understanding Data Allowances

  • 1–5 GB: Light users who mainly connect via home or work Wi-Fi
  • 10–20 GB: Moderate users — social media, maps, occasional streaming on the go
  • 30–50 GB: Regular users who stream video while out
  • 100 GB+: Heavy users or those who use mobile as a Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Unlimited: No monthly cap — check for speed restrictions or hotspot limits in the specific terms

💡 Check your actual data usage before choosing: iPhone → Settings → Mobile Data (scroll down to see app usage). Android → Settings → Network → Mobile Data Usage. This shows exactly how much you use each month across different apps.

5G on SIM Only Plans

All major UK networks now include 5G access on most SIM-only plans at no additional charge, provided you have a 5G-compatible device. O2 and EE include 5G Standalone (5G+) access on eligible plan tiers. Always confirm 5G is included in your specific plan and that your location has 5G coverage before choosing on the basis of 5G availability.

Key Things to Check Before Signing

  • Network coverage quality at your home, work and key regular locations
  • Whether your phone is unlocked — if switching networks, your device must be unlocked to accept a new SIM
  • Annual price rise clauses — what percentage increase is applied each year, and is it stated in cash terms?
  • What happens if you exceed your data allowance — auto-cap or per-GB overage charges?
  • EU and international roaming terms for your travel habits
  • Notice period required to cancel the plan
Home Pay Monthly Guide

Pay Monthly Phones — UK Guide

How Pay Monthly phone contracts work — costs, upgrades, price rises and what to check before signing.

What is a Pay Monthly Phone Contract?

A Pay Monthly phone contract bundles a new handset with a monthly airtime plan (calls, texts and data) into one single monthly direct debit. The device cost is spread over the contract period — usually 24 months. At contract end, you own the phone and can upgrade, switch to SIM-only, or move to another network.

How the Costs Break Down

Upfront payment: Optional — paying more upfront reduces the monthly amount. Can be £0 to several hundred pounds depending on the device and deal.

Monthly device element: The handset's retail cost divided across the contract months (minus upfront).

Monthly airtime element: Your calls, texts and data allowance cost.

Total cost of ownership: Upfront payment + (monthly payment × number of months) = the true total amount you pay.

💡 Always calculate the total contract cost — not just the monthly figure. A lower monthly payment over 36 months may cost significantly more overall than a higher payment over 24 months. Compare total costs, not just monthly amounts.

Annual Mid-Contract Price Rises

Most UK networks apply annual mid-contract price increases. These are typically linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) plus an additional fixed percentage (e.g. CPI + 3.9%). From 2025, Ofcom requires these increases to be stated in clear cash terms at point of sale — so you should know the maximum annual cash rise before signing. Tesco Mobile offers selected plans with no mid-contract price rises — check specific plan terms.

Upgrades

At end of your minimum contract term, you can: (1) Upgrade to a new device on a new contract; (2) Switch to a cheaper SIM-only plan — often significantly cheaper as the device is now fully paid off; (3) Port to another network using a PAC code. Most networks will contact you approaching your contract end date. Never assume you must upgrade — comparing a SIM-only continuation with the upgrade offer often reveals substantial savings.

What to Check Before Signing

  • Total cost of ownership (upfront + monthly × months) vs buying phone outright + SIM-only
  • Annual price rise clause — what is the maximum cash increase per year?
  • Early termination fee if you need to leave before contract end
  • Data allowance vs your actual monthly usage
  • Network coverage at your home and workplace
  • Whether 5G is included on your chosen plan
  • What happens at contract end — does the direct debit continue at the same amount?
Home PAYG Guide

Pay As You Go — UK Guide

How PAYG works in the UK, who it suits, and how it compares to SIM-only contracts.

What is Pay As You Go?

Pay As You Go (PAYG) is a mobile service option where you pay in advance rather than on a monthly contract. You top up credit onto your SIM — typically in amounts from £5 to £50 — which you then use to buy 30-day rolling bundles of data, calls and texts, or pay for individual usage. There is no monthly contract commitment. You simply stop topping up if you no longer need the service.

How Modern PAYG Works

  1. Top up credit to your account (minimum top-up varies by network, typically £5–£10)
  2. Use credit to purchase a 30-day rolling bundle — e.g. data, minutes and texts for a fixed amount
  3. Use calls, texts and data from your bundle for the 30-day period
  4. Bundle typically auto-renews monthly — cancel renewal at any time with no penalty

Who is PAYG Best For?

  • Very occasional or low-usage mobile users
  • Children needing controlled mobile access
  • Elderly users requiring a simple backup phone
  • Second or backup SIMs for occasional use
  • Tourists or short-term UK visitors needing a temporary UK number

💡 If you regularly buy the same PAYG bundle every month, compare it with a 1-month rolling SIM-only plan. You'll almost always get significantly more data for the same or similar monthly spend with a rolling SIM-only contract — with identical flexibility to cancel with 30 days' notice.

Tesco Mobile PAYG Essentials (2026)

In April 2026, Tesco Mobile launched a new PAYG Essentials product tier, offering competitive top-up bundles with Tesco Clubcard points integration — allowing PAYG customers to earn loyalty points on their top-ups. This is a unique feature in the UK PAYG market.

Home eSIM Guide

eSIM — UK Guide

What eSIM is, how it works, compatible devices, and which UK networks support it.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM permanently built into your device's hardware. Unlike a traditional plastic SIM card you physically insert and remove, an eSIM is a chip soldered onto your phone's circuit board that can be programmed with different network profiles digitally. You activate a mobile plan by scanning a QR code — no physical card ever needed.

How eSIM Activation Works

  1. Order an eSIM plan from your chosen UK network
  2. Receive a QR code via email or in the network's app
  3. Go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM on your device
  4. Scan the QR code — the network profile downloads automatically
  5. Activation typically completes within minutes

Compatible Devices

Apple iPhone: XS, XS Max, XR (2018) and all subsequent models. iPhone 15 and newer US models are eSIM-only — no physical SIM tray.

Samsung Galaxy: S20 series (2020) and newer flagship models. Some mid-range models also support eSIM — check individual specifications.

Google Pixel: Pixel 3 (2018) and newer. All Pixel 7 and 8 series support eSIM.

iPad: Air (3rd gen+), Pro (11" and 12.9" 3rd gen+), mini (5th gen+), iPad (7th gen+).

⚠️ eSIM compatibility varies even within device families. Always verify your specific device model on your chosen network's eSIM compatibility list before ordering an eSIM plan.

UK Networks Supporting eSIM

All five major UK networks support eSIM: O2, EE, Three, Vodafone and Tesco Mobile. Support extends to SIM-only, Pay Monthly and some PAYG plans. The activation process and supported plan types may vary between networks.

Benefits of eSIM

  • Instant activation: No waiting for a physical SIM to arrive in the post
  • Dual SIM capability: Most compatible phones support one physical SIM + one eSIM simultaneously — separate work and personal numbers on one phone
  • Travel: Add a local travel eSIM abroad without swapping your UK SIM — maintain both numbers simultaneously
  • No physical loss: Nothing to drop, damage, or lose down a drain
  • Remote setup: Activate a new plan without visiting a store
Home 5G & Coverage Guide

5G & Coverage — UK Guide

Understanding 4G, 5G and 5G Standalone — and how to check real-world signal at your location.

Understanding UK Mobile Coverage

Coverage refers to the geographic area in which a mobile network provides signal. In the UK, coverage is typically measured by population coverage (percentage of people who can receive signal where they live) and geographic coverage (percentage of UK land area with signal). Population coverage is usually much higher than geographic coverage — because people are concentrated in towns and cities, not spread across the full rural landmass.

4G LTE — The Current Baseline

4G LTE is the current standard for mobile broadband in the UK. Real-world download speeds typically range from 20–70 Mbps depending on network, location and congestion. 4G is more than adequate for browsing, social media, HD video streaming, video calls, navigation and email. All major UK networks (O2, EE, Three, Vodafone) claim approximately 99% 4G population coverage.

5G — What It Means in Practice

5G delivers faster speeds (typically 100–500+ Mbps), lower latency and greater capacity than 4G. It makes a meaningful difference for: heavy data users, mobile hotspot use, downloading large files, 4K video streaming, and in congested areas where 4G is saturated. You need a 5G-compatible device to use it. The specific spectrum band used affects performance: 700MHz 5G has excellent range and building penetration but lower peak speeds; sub-6GHz mid-band delivers the best balance of speed and coverage.

5G Standalone (5G SA / 5G+) Explained

Standard 5G in the UK uses Non-Standalone (NSA) architecture — 5G radios for data but still relying on 4G core network infrastructure for signalling. O2 (5G+) and EE (5G+) have deployed 5G Standalone (5G SA) networks — using a pure end-to-end 5G core network. Benefits include: potentially sub-5ms latency (vs ~20ms for NSA), network slicing for different use cases, better performance in congested areas, and improved reliability. Three and Vodafone currently use NSA 5G architecture.

UK 5G Summary (2026)

Tesco MobileVia O2 5G SAVia O2Same as O2 infrastructure

How to Check Coverage at Your Location

  • Network coverage checkers: Each network's website has a postcode-based checker showing predicted indoor and outdoor 4G and 5G signal
  • Ofcom's independent coverage checker (ofcom.org.uk): Compares all networks simultaneously by postcode — most useful for side-by-side comparison
  • Real-world testing: Coverage maps show predictions — building materials, terrain and local interference affect actual signal. Test a PAYG SIM at your location before committing to a long contract

Improving Weak Indoor Signal

  • Wi-Fi Calling: All major UK networks support Wi-Fi Calling — make voice calls over your home broadband when mobile signal is weak. Free to use, calls use your normal plan allowance. Enable in your phone's Settings.
  • Position near windows or on higher floors where signal is typically stronger
  • Consider whether thick walls, energy-efficient glass, or underground locations are affecting signal

💡 Coverage maps are predictions — not guarantees. The most reliable way to know if a network works well at your address is to test a PAYG SIM at your actual location before signing any contract.

Home Roaming Guide

Roaming & International — UK Guide

Post-Brexit roaming for UK customers — what changed, each network's current policy, and travel tips.

What is Mobile Roaming?

Mobile roaming occurs when your UK SIM connects to a foreign network while travelling abroad. Your UK network has agreements with overseas operators allowing your device to make calls, send texts and use data via their infrastructure. The cost and terms depend entirely on your UK network and your specific plan.

What Changed After Brexit

Before Brexit, EU regulations ("Roam Like at Home") required UK networks to charge UK prices for usage in EU member states. These rules applied until 31 December 2020. Since then, UK networks are no longer legally required to offer free EU roaming, and policies have diverged significantly between operators.

⚠️ Always check your specific plan's current roaming terms before travelling. Network policies change frequently. The information below is general educational guidance only — not guaranteed to be current at time of reading. Verify with your network directly.

UK Network Roaming — General Guidance (2026)

Three UK (Go Roam): Three includes free roaming in 71 countries at no extra cost on eligible Pay Monthly plans — all EU member states plus US, Australia, New Zealand and many others. Your UK allowance (data, minutes and texts) is used as normal. Fair use policies apply on unlimited data plans in certain destinations.

Tesco Mobile (Home From Home): Free roaming in 48 EU and international destinations on eligible plans. Tesco Mobile has confirmed it currently has no plans to introduce roaming charges.

EE: Terms vary significantly by plan tier. Essentials plans charge approximately £2.29/day for EU roaming. All Rounder plans include free EU roaming. Full Works plans extend free roaming worldwide with a 50GB fair use data cap. Always confirm which tier your plan is on.

O2: Terms vary by plan. Some O2 plans include EU roaming; others require a daily Roaming Passport add-on. Check your specific plan on O2's website or in the My O2 app before travelling.

Vodafone: Roaming terms depend on your specific Vodafone plan. Vodafone has strong international coverage in 100+ countries. Always check your plan's roaming page for current EU and worldwide terms.

Ofcom's £45 Spend Cap Protection

Ofcom regulations require all UK mobile networks to apply a default data roaming spend cap of £45 (excluding VAT) per billing period. When this cap is reached, data roaming is automatically paused. You can raise, lower or remove this cap by contacting your network — but removing it entirely is not recommended unless you fully understand the potential charges.

Travel eSIMs — An Alternative

Travel eSIMs from specialist travel providers offer local data access in specific countries, often at much lower rates than traditional network roaming. On compatible dual-SIM devices, you can run your UK SIM for calls and texts alongside a travel eSIM for data — keeping your UK number active while using cheaper local data.

Travel Tips

  • Check your network's roaming page specifically for each destination country before departure
  • Download offline maps before travelling to minimise data usage
  • Use Wi-Fi Calling to make calls over hotel or café Wi-Fi without consuming roaming allowance
  • Turn off background app refresh and automatic updates when roaming
  • Verify your roaming spend cap is enabled for protection against unexpected charges
  • Consider a travel eSIM for trips of a week or more to significantly reduce costs

The UK mobile market is complex — dozens of plan options, rapidly changing technology, post-Brexit roaming uncertainty, and pricing structures that can be difficult to compare. Most comparison websites earn commissions from networks, meaning their recommendations can be commercially influenced. Romosolf.online is different: we do not earn commissions, we do not sell plans, and we have no affiliation with any network or related company.

What We Cover

  • Complete histories of all five major UK mobile networks with verified facts and timelines
  • Detailed explanations of all UK mobile plan types
  • 5G and 4G coverage guidance and how to check coverage independently
  • Post-Brexit roaming information for UK customers
  • eSIM technology explained in plain language
  • How to switch networks and port your number
  • Side-by-side network comparisons based on independent benchmarking

Our Standards

  • We never claim to be "official" or represent any network
  • We never guarantee prices or make misleading statements
  • We state clearly what data sources we use (Ofcom, Opensignal, RootMetrics, Uswitch)
  • We include clear disclaimers on every page about our independent status
  • Information is reviewed and updated regularly to reflect current market conditions

💡 For official support, billing help or account management, contact your network directly. O2: 202, EE: 150, Three: 333, Tesco Mobile: 4455, Vodafone: 191.
